About Stone & Basket
Updated 1 June 2026
Stone & Basket is a small editorial collection of working notes on decorating with stone and natural materials, written with German interiors and gardens in mind. The focus is narrow on purpose: pebbles, dry stone, gravel and gabion baskets, treated in enough material detail to be useful when planning real work.
What you will find here
Each note describes how a material behaves rather than promoting a particular finished look. We cover the practical questions that decide whether a stone feature lasts — drainage, frost behaviour, sub-base depth, edging — and place them in the context of the German climate and building traditions.
- Reading notes on individual materials and methods.
- Regional context for conditions found across Germany.
- References to publicly available heritage and craft sources.
Editorial approach
The texts are descriptive and neutral. Where exact figures depend on a specific site or product, the notes use general formulations rather than invented numbers. Images are drawn from Wikimedia Commons under their respective Creative Commons licences, credited beneath each photograph.
